FSE Fiberglass Structural Engineering FRP vessels and ducting shown with industrial design plans.

Fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) equipment is designed around the conditions it will face in service. FRP tanks, piping, scrubbers, and ductwork are commonly used in industrial environments where corrosion resistance and structural performance are important. Their reliability depends on the laminate construction, resin selection, corrosion barrier, loading conditions, thermal effects, and fabrication quality. Fiberglass Structural Engineering (FSE) provides engineering services for these systems, including specifications, design reviews, materials testing, inspection, and failure investigation.

Designing FRP Tanks and Piping

FRP tank design begins with the equipment’s intended service conditions. Chemical exposure, mechanical loads, temperature, and environmental conditions all affect material and structural requirements. The laminate and resin system must be appropriate for the application, while the corrosion barrier must provide suitable protection from the process environment.

FSE develops detailed FRP specifications covering laminate construction, resin selection, corrosion barriers, inspection requirements, testing, and fabrication practices. Establishing these requirements during the specification stage gives fabricators clear criteria for construction and provides a basis for quality verification.

Piping design requires additional consideration of pressure, stress, surge loading, mechanical loads, vibration, and thermal effects. FSE reviews fiberglass piping systems for structural design, environmental loading, corrosion barrier adequacy, stress conditions, surge loading, and mechanical details. These factors help determine if the piping design is appropriate for its intended operating conditions.

FRP material properties also need to be considered during design. Unlike many conventional engineering materials with more standardized published properties, FRP performance can vary significantly with resin selection, glass content, laminate construction, manufacturing quality, service environment, and loading conditions. FSE conducts testing that can provide specific information about the material and its structural performance.

For FRP pipe, ring bending or hoop flexural stiffness testing provides information about pipe stiffness and deformation behavior under loading. Hoop tensile or split disk testing measures tensile strength in the hoop direction and can support evaluations of pipe strength and structural integrity.

Engineering FRP Scrubbers and Ductwork

FRP scrubbers and ductwork are designed for the conditions created by industrial processes. Chemical exposure, environmental loading, thermal effects, and mechanical stresses can affect the performance of these systems. The design must account for the specific service environment and establish appropriate material and structural requirements.

FSE performs engineering reviews for fiberglass scrubbers, ductwork, stacks, tanks, vessels, and piping systems. These reviews examine structural design, environmental loading, corrosion barrier adequacy, stress conditions, surge loading, and mechanical details as applicable to the equipment.

For scrubbers, corrosion resistance is a major design consideration because the equipment can operate in chemically aggressive process environments. The corrosion barrier and laminate construction must be suited to the service conditions. Detailed specifications help define these requirements before fabrication begins.

Ductwork also needs to be evaluated according to its operating environment and structural demands. FSE provides engineering support for FRP ductwork and stack projects through specifications, design services, engineering reviews, and field troubleshooting. The objective is to establish a design that accounts for the conditions the equipment will encounter during service.

Fabrication quality is closely connected to design performance. Laminate construction, resin selection, glass content, and manufacturing processes influence the properties of the finished component. FSE provides third-party quality assurance inspections for FRP fabrication, installation, and repairs. Fabrication shop inspections evaluate materials, workmanship, and processes against project requirements and applicable standards, while construction site inspections verify that components are installed according to approved procedures.

Design Review, Testing, and Long-Term FRP Reliability

FRP engineering continues after the initial design. Design reviews and materials testing can verify that equipment meets its intended requirements, while inspections and engineering evaluations provide information about its condition during service.

FSE’s design review services cover fiberglass tanks, vessels, scrubbers, ductwork, stacks, and piping systems. Engineers evaluate structural design and service-related factors, including environmental loading, corrosion barrier adequacy, stress conditions, surge loading, and mechanical details.

Materials testing provides measurable information about FRP laminates when their properties or condition need to be established. FSE performs flexural, tensile, short beam shear, pipe stiffness, hoop tensile or split disk, ignition loss, and water absorption testing, along with laboratory visual examination. These tests can support failure investigations, quality verification, inspection programs, and engineering evaluations.

Preventive maintenance inspections help identify changes in FRP equipment during service. FSE evaluates tanks, piping, scrubbers, and ductwork using visual inspection, remote visual inspection, nondestructive evaluation methods, quantitative laminate thickness measurements, and corrosion barrier evaluation. These inspections can identify conditions such as laminate damage, delamination, cracking, corrosion barrier degradation, and other service-related concerns.

Remote visual inspection provides access to equipment where manned entry is difficult or impractical. FSE uses remote-operated, camera-mounted equipment for FRP piping, tanks, scrubbers, and other difficult-access systems. Pushrod, crawler, dry, and submersible camera equipment can document interior conditions and provide information for maintenance planning or further engineering evaluation.

When FRP equipment fails, determining the underlying cause requires an engineering assessment of the material, equipment, and operating history. FSE‘s failure investigation process can include site investigation, document review, laboratory testing, design adequacy review, maintenance and incident history review, engineering evaluation, and root cause analysis. The findings can support decisions involving repair, replacement, redesign, or operational changes.

Effective FRP design connects material selection and laminate construction with the actual demands placed on the equipment. For tanks, piping, scrubbers, and ductwork, engineers need to account for service conditions, structural requirements, corrosion exposure, fabrication, and quality control from the beginning. Inspection and testing then provide objective information that can support continued maintenance and reliability decisions throughout the equipment’s service life. If you need specialized engineering support for FRP tanks, piping, scrubbers, or ductwork, contact FSE to discuss your design, engineering review, materials testing, inspection, or evaluation requirements.
