Windpower Engineering and Development published an article today titled, 'High-performance fiberglass allows longer and lighter blades' regarding a new glass fiber that is being use in the wind industry. HiPer-tex W2020 is a new type of glass fiber that is stronger and lighter than E-glass and could soon be used in our industry if it proves itself in the wind industry. It appears to be similar in strength to S-Glass but a direct comparison hasn't been made yet.
Typically with new developments in glass fibers the increased strength is not worth the increased cost so we'll see how this pans out. Selective use of this new glass fiber in our industry will probably pave the way for broader use as price drops.
